Cara McDonald
Registered Midwife
I am Cara McDonald a locum midwife with the Innu Midwifery Program. I have had the privilege of supporting the students in their learning of becoming midwives in their home communities.
I am an Indigenous Apprentice trained midwife from Manitoba with 29 years of attending births in homes, birth center and hospitals.
My introduction to midwifery was my own home birth attended by 2 midwives. After they left my birth I said to my
husband, I wanted to be just like them. That started my journey in becoming a midwife. I trained with Gisele Fontaine in home births, a short stop in El Paso Texas and then completed the Assessment and Upgrading of all Manitoba Midwives in 2001. I became a Registered Midwife and practiced full time midwifery in all settings for 24 ½ years. I retired from full time practice in November 2025.
Things that are close to my heart and how I practiced are; catching not delivering babies, continuity of care, meeting the person where they are in their life. Providing culturally safe care and respecting the person’s choices. If they call, I will come; a moto that kept me very busy!
