Jessica Swain

Registered Métis Midwife

I am of mixed Métis and European ancestry and my Métis ancestors trace back to Red River, Manitoba, however, I was raised in Treaty 6 and 7 Territories. I am the mother of Olive; the jewel of my life!

My fourth great grandmother, Catherine Spence, was an Indigenous midwife, and like many other Indigenous midwives, mother nature and ancestral guidance shaped my calling into this beautiful profession.

I graduated from Mount Royal University, in 2016 and have been working in Indigenous communities ever since.

I love midwifery, and approach the profound transformation

of pregnancy and birth with deep respect and acknowledgement of the  physical, mental, emotional and  spiritual nature of this heart work.

I see the revitalization of Indigenous midwifery as an essential step towards intergenerational healing, repairing the kinship shattering of colonization, and making the ancestors proud. I feel so lucky for this opportunity to be of service to the Innu community and midwifery program as they reclaim these sacred pathways to wellness through caring and kinship.
